Early Childhood Development Stages and Beyond

Early Childhood Development Stages and Beyond

After our children are born, we look at them and see them grow so very rapidly for first couple of years. Thereafter, the growth slows down, but it continues till their early twenties. However, this growth isn’t just physical. We see them making new movements, we hear them speak their first words, and we see them walk run and play.

While we see so much of development, it is nothing more than the tip of the iceberg.  Just like 90% of an iceberg is submerged inside the ocean, in a similar way, the greatest part of the development of our child lies within them. Their thoughts, the way they perceive the world around them, and how they relate to it is under a constant flux. Not only that, even the environment of a person has a much more definitive impact during one’s formative years. That’s why to be able to better understand, observe, and deal with a child, we must be able to look at the world from their point of view.

Understanding the Development of Your Child

If we take into account all the developmental stages that a child goes through until they are in their early twenties, then we can divide it into twenty-five stages. In fact, our child completes the first of these stages till they are just around three years old. It would take them around fourteen to eighteen more years to complete the other half of these stages.

When considering these developmental stages, we should take into account the overall development of the child. Among others, this includes their physical, adaptive, cognitive, communicative, and socio-emotional development. These are all necessary for assessing childhood development. The infographic below explains all of them in detail.
